Alumni Spotlight: Roxanne Aguilera
From Learning Abroad to Leading Abroad
Roxanne Aguilera is a graduate of Chapman University, where she earned her master's degree in Interantional Studies and bachelor's degree in Political Science and Sociology. During her time at Chapman, she pursued academic interests in restorative justice, global development, social justice, and cross-cultural education. Her graduate coursework centered on themes such as gender-based violence with a regional focus on Spain, human rights, international cooperation, and the political economy of structural violence.
In 2024, she participated in CIEL’s Vietnam and Cambodia program, an experiential learning trip that focused on the political, historical, and social legacies of colonialism, war, and post-conflict recovery. The program included site visits to museums, memorials, and local organizations, as well as discussions with civil society actors and researchers working in the field of reconciliation and development.
Following the program, she was awarded a 2025 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Spain. As part of this role, she will be based in Galicia, teaching English while also designing and leading a community-based project. Her proposed project involves partnering with a local domestic violence shelter to facilitate confidence- and skill-building workshops for women in the community.
Roxanne’s academic background, professional interests, and international experiences reflect a consistent focus on social equity and grassroots-level engagement. Her participation in the Vietnam and Cambodia program through CIEL supported her ongoing interest in international education and depended her applied work in cross-cultural settings.
She will begin her Fulbright placement in fall 2025 and intends on attending law school upon completion of the program.
